Roland J. Green (1890 – 1972)
My introduction to Roland Greens work was, as was true of several other British painters of birds, via a series of books on the birds of Britain given to me when I was in my teens. The images were so small that it was difficult to make much of the art, but as was true of Lodge, Green’s work showed me that one could be “looser” in treatment than I was used to, and especially so when showing distinctive species. Green had an “open” look to his work, so that they looked more like “gallery paintings” that had birds in them, than illustrations of bird species. While I have no desire to paint like him, I have no doubt what he did was an influence on my work.
